In l915 the Federal League, which already had a club operating in Brooklyn, decided to plant another team in the New York City area by moving the l914 pennant winning Indianapolis Hoosier club into Newark N.J..
A brand new 20,000 seat stadium was built in neighboring Harrison for the Peppers to play in. The club had a lineup almost identical to the previous season's Hoosiers. They remained competitive for most of the season, thanks to the bats of outfielders Vin Campbell (.310) and Edd Roush (.298) and the pitching of Ed Reulbach (20-10). But after a disastrous eight game loosing streak in September the Peppers finished up the season in fifth place.
The Newark Peppers were the only major league baseball team that New Jersey ever had, and they, along with the league, vanished after the season was over.
