Hoboken NJ (PRWEB) June 13, 2005 -- Alexander Joy Cartwright, IV, CEO of Mr. Baseball LLC will present the City of Hoboken a birthday present this Friday the 17th of June at Hoboken’s City Hall. Along with his partner Darrel Smith, Alex will present a stainless steel plaque to the city

“Baseball is more than a sport in this country,” Mr. Cartwright said. “It’s a declaration of our freedom and a designation of the bond that makes our country great. Elysian Fields represents the place in time where the seed of this great game was planted only to produce a remarkable harvest many years later.

Mr. Cartwright will be available for comments after the presentation which should take place around 1:30 pm. For more information please contact Geri Fallow, Arts Director for the City of Hoboken. Geri’s phone number is (201) 420-2207.

Hoboken, New Jersey celebrates its 150th Birthday this year and in so doing is having a birthday party all year long but especially June 18-19th. During these days a vintage baseball tournament will take place in Hoboken to honor the Grand Old Game.

The birthday plaque was commissioned by Mr. Baseball LLC and manufactured by a Seattle, Washington laser imaging company. Mr. Cartwright described the process of creating this plaque as follows: “Using 16-gauge 304 stainless steel, we applied a chemical to the surface that allows the laser to ‘stick’ to the metal. Then we laser-engrave it. Everywhere the laser touches turns black. Once the process is done, the chemical is washed off and the result is permanent graphite grey laser marks on the stainless steel. The overall size is 26 7/16” wide and 21” tall.”

In addition, Mr. Baseball LLC has produced a “Limited Edition” of (120) Cherry Wood plaques depicting the Elysian Fields of 1846.

Background:
In the mid-1800s, Alexander Joy Cartwright, Junior was the founder of the New York Knickerbocker Ball Club. Not only did he create the first organized baseball team, but he also designed the baseball diamond and specified the distance between the bases, along with other rules and regulations still in use today. Although Cartwright was only with the Knickerbocker club for its first four years of existence, the club itself lasted until 1882. Cartwright caught Gold Fever in 1849 and ventured west. It is said he became a kind of “Johnny Appleseed” of baseball, teaching the game to settlers at frontier towns and Army posts, and even Indians along the way. He eventually traveled as far west as the Hawaiian Islands where he lived a notable life until his death in 1892.

His descendant, Alex Cartwright, IV, has become another kind of “Johnny Appleseed,” who has spoken at various events over the years representing his ancestor’s legacy. His website, MrBaseball.com, devoted to the history of baseball, attracts interest from baseball enthusiasts from all over the world. He receives emails for his assistance with historical baseball references from publishers and literary agents, and even children who want help doing a school report. Last year Mr. Cartwright created the Mr. Baseball Foundation to assist small community youth groups and to offer monetary assistance to the Cystic Fibrosis Society.

Alexander J Cartwright newest Board Member of the "World Sports Hall of Fame"

TORONTO -- JUNE 3, 2004 -- The World Sports Hall of Fame announced the names of its first indcutees today. Seventeen of the worlds greatest athletes representing seven countries and 13 sports make up this inaugural class. The World Sports Hall of Fame was created to honour all-time excellence said chairman Bruce Prentice of Toronto. Our selectors started with a list of more than 400 superstars that, after much discussion and analysis, has been reduced to our first seventeen selections.

All inductees must have been retired from elite competition for five years. Four of those selected in 2004 -- Sonja Henie, Joe Louis, Babe Ruth and Jim Thorpe -- are deceased and therefore inducted as Legends of Sport.

Four sports contributed two inductees each: boxers Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis , basketball players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Russell , baseball stars Babe Ruth and Willie Mays and tennis greats Billie Jean King and Rod Laver .

The remaining nine inductees are scattered from one end of the world of sports to the other. The one characteristic they all share is excellence: an ability to perform at their best when the stakes are highest, said selection committee member and sports historian John Thorn of Kingston, New York.

Jim Brown was the National Football League's most valuable player four times while figure skater Sonja Henie won gold at three consecutive Winter Olympics. Edmund Hillary reached the summit of Mt. Everest and crossed the Antarctic in the 1950s. Gordie Howe starred in the National Hockey League in five different decades. Cyclist Eddy Merckx won 445 professional races.

Jack Nicklaus , golf's “Golden Bear,” won 70 PGA events and 20 major tournaments. Pele led Brazil to soccer's World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Mark Spitz dazzled in the pool at the 1972 Olympics and, in an earlier era, Jim Thorpe excelled in many sports including athletics, baseball and football.

In addition, the World Sports Hall of Fame has honoured two outstanding sports dynasties, the Brazilian national soccer team of 1958 to 1970 and the Soviet national hockey team of 1963 to 1990 as well as the single-season performance of the New York Yankees of 1961. Bob Beamon's world-record setting long jump at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City has been selected as a great moment in sport.

“Selecting sports' greatest teams and moments forced us to think beyond outstanding individual careers,” said sports publisher Dan Diamond of the Selection Committee. “Great teams almost always have coaching to match, so these awards are a tribute to coaches and managers that enabled their athletes to perform at their best.”

Fifteen directors and advisors of the World Sports Hall of Fame from North America, Europe and Asia participated in the selection of the inaugural group of inductees. Many of those honoured will be in attendance at the World Sports Hall of Fame's first Induction Gala in Toronto, Canada, October, 14, 2004.

The World Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization. It is allied with charities that uses sport and play to facilitate child growth and development for children living in disadvantaged circumstances.
