Vintage baseball enthusiasts will be re-enacting the 140th anniversary of the birth of organized baseball in the Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington areas.

This Sunday, May 28th at 1:00pm, on the parade grounds of the National Historic Reserve at Fort Vancouver, Washington, vintage baseball enthusiasts will be re-enacting the 140th anniversary of the birth of organized baseball in the Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington areas by officially organizing the 21st Century version of the club. They will be holding their first meeting and ratifying the club’s constitution with future plans to play exhibition games by the rules put down by the National Association of Base Ball Players of the 1860s.

In attendance will be Alexander Joy Cartwright IV, Commissioner of the Pacific Northwest Vintage Baseball League. Alex will welcome the new ball club as its first member into the vintage league.

BACKGROUND:

On May 28th, 1866, local businessmen and artisans of Portland created the Portland Pioneers Base Ball Club. They were the first nationally recognized baseball team in the Pacific Northwest. By July of 1867, there were seventeen teams in Portland alone.

The goal of the new Pioneers is to educate the public of the little known history of the national pastime in the Portland and Vancouver areas.

Although this is not a park service sponsored event, anyone interested in baseball history is welcome to stop by the gazebo at the parade grounds. There will be some period baseball equipment and examples of the reproduced 1866 Pioneers uniforms.
