1870

Undefeated in 1869, the Cincinnati Reds opened 1870 with 30 more victories. Two of the best games were with one of their principal rivals, the Atlantics of Brooklyn.

The clubs met for a third time at Brooklyn's Capitoline Grounds on June 14. Cincinnati scored twice in the first inning and led 3-0 lead after three. Brooklyn rallied for two runs in the fourth and tied the game at 5-5 in the ninth. At the end of regulation play the sides debated whether to declare the contest a draw, but it was agreed to play to a conclusion.

In the 11th, Cincinnati scored twice. But Brooklyn got one run back in its half of the inning and moved the tying run to third with none out. Bob Ferguson slapped a single to right to tie the game, then took third on an error and stole him with the run that broke Cincinnati's two-season winning streak.
